What is it about dogs and commercials? (Plus, meet our office mascot, Leo)
The Travelers Insurance dog, sleeping with his most prized possession
The Entrepreneur article notes that dogs:
Make you look. As soon as you see a dog in an ad or on a commercial, positive associations with dogs come in to your mind, and you keep watching.
Dogs engage our emotions. Now this one is definitely true. Who can resist a wheelbarrow full of puppies, or the hilarious sight of a Basset Hound walking upright, serving a Bud Light?
We trust man's best friend. Brands are always trying to build a feeling of trustworthiness, and by creating ads featuring dogs, they hope to associate that feeling with their brand.
Dog lovers feel a kinship. Apparently, nearly 40% of all households in America have a dog. Thus, by featuring a dog in your commercial, you're automatically relating to 40% of the population.
I'd have to side with the second point -- dogs engage our emotions. Being a dog-lover myself, I can't help but feel happy when I see an adorable, worrisome dog on an insurance commercial. I feel happy in the same way I feel happy when I look over at our office mascot, Leo (pictured right). He's such an odd dog.
Happiness is addictive. And I think it's this fact that savvy advertisers are running with. That's also the reason why I'm finishing this blog post to go rub Leo's beckoning belly.
