Twitter tips for #twitternewbies, or how to not be one of those people I avoid on Twitter
Last week my boyfriend finally jumped on the Twitter bandwagon, which means for the past week I've been giving him tips on how to not look like a complete #twitternewbie.

Assuming you already know what Twitter is (and if you don't watch the video above), here are a few tips to get you on your way to Twitter success.

The deal with followersbad_twitter_ratio.png
When you first notice you have a new follower, don't automatically follow them back (even though that's considered "good Twitter etiquette"). First check:
  1. How many people are following them compared to how many people they're following (aka Following:Follwers ratio). If they're following 1,469 people but only have 547 followers (like this guy), they're probably a spammer.
  2. Check how many tweets they've done. Some people join twitter to just "listen" and don't contribute much. If one of your followers has only done a dozen tweets or so (and they've been on Twitter for a while), you'll get no value out of following them, so don't bother.
The deal with the Following:Followers ratio
Relating back to the first tip, if you're following a ton of people (even news sources, celebrities, sports teams) but only have a handful of followers, people will think you are a spammer. So try to keep your Following:Followers ratio fairly equal, even if that means un-following Charlie Sheen.

The deal with hashtags

Hashtags are words with a # at the beginning, such as #twitternewbie. Hashtags are used to discuss a certain topic and be able to easily find tweets related to that topic.
  • For example, this week is National Small Business Week, and lots of people who are tweeting about it end their tweets with "#SBW2011" so that others who are discussing Small Biz Week can easily find related tweets.

To see if there's a hashtag relevant to your tweet, simply search for your tweet topic (such as food, architecture, Japan etc.) and see what hashtags are being used to discussed those topics. Lots of the time, there may not be a related hashtag, which is fine.

Finally, the deal with tweet frequency
In order to be "taken seriously" on Twitter, my opinion is that you should be tweeting at the very least once a day. When I'm considering who to follow, I like to make sure they're tweeting a fair amount, otherwise chances are their tweets will simply get lost in my Twitter stream and I'll get little value out of their few-and-far-between tweets. So tweet often to prove to potential followers that you'll be of value to them.

Do you have any tips for a #twitternewbie? What kind of people do you avoid on twitter?
