At the end of the day Twitter is still just... Twitter
A while back I made a spelling mistake on Twitter. Gasp! I know, it was pretty embarrassing. I immediately had a flashback to a previous boss harshly scolding me for including a spelling error in a company tweet. "We're trying to uphold a professional image! 208 followers just saw that mistake!"-- you get the idea.
My recent spelling mistake. Ah, catastrophe!
At the time, not knowing much about Twitter at all, I thought maybe she was right. And that this silly thing called Twitter -- where tweeples tweet and post twitpics for the twitosphere to see -- was a very serious and scary system where people take each other very seriously.
Luckily, I soon learned that this wasn't the case. Yes, Twitter is a great marketing tool for brands, corporations, celebrities, big and small businesses alike. So, taking into account its power, value and scope-- to certain extent, it should be taken seriously. But the beauty of Twitter (and the reason why it's such a great marketing tool) is that it allows worldwide brands, celebrities and local businesses to freely interact with customers, fans and local prospects.
No RSVPs, scheduling or 1-800 numbers are needed to get into contact with anyone on Twitter. You just write your tweet and hit "submit." Does this sound like a serious and scary system to you? No.
Twitter spelling mistake redemption! I made a (funny?) joke.
So, to get to my point: Tweeples are casual. Everyone makes the occasional spelling, grammar and punctuation mistake. Actually, tons of people do.
If you're a small business owner who's afraid to jump into the world of Twitter for fear of what the twitosphere will think of you or that you'll make a mistake, just do it! At the end of the day Twitter is still just... Twitter. Your business is so much more than a profile on a silly-named website.
