6 easy ways to green your office
When you're at home, you might may compost, use EnergyStar appliances, use organic household cleaners, and take quick showers to try cut back on energy and waste. But do you take the same precautions at work?
People often forget that they do spend most of their days at work -- and therefor probably do most of their energy consumption and wasting there too.
Fear not! With a few simple changes, you can get your office to the same green status as your home. Here are 6 easy ways to begin greening your office:
Keep an eye on light usage: Switch your T-12 fluorescent lights to T-8 lights, which require 20% less energy. And always turn the lights off in unoccupied rooms.
Let your appliances get some rest: Turn off computers, printers -- everything! -- when you leave for the day. If possible, switch to a multi-function appliance like a printer/scanner/fax as opposed to three separate machines.
Cut down on office transportation: Encourage carpooling, taking public transportation, biking to work, or working from home to reduce your carbon footprint.
Make your way to becoming paperless: Only print or make copies when it's absolutely necessary. Similarly, if collaborating on a document, make edits inline (such as using the Microsoft Word Track Changes tool) as opposed to marking up a hard copy. Set up your printers to print on both sides of the paper. And store all your files in the cloud as opposed to in a file cabinet.
Get eco-friendly: Use biodegradable soap, recycled paper towels, recycled pens & pencils, recycled note paper, and compostable flatware and cups if you supply it for your staff.
Better yet, use the real stuff: Buy real silverware, plates and cups for staff to use. Outlaw bottled water and encourage the staff to brew their own coffee instead of making Starbucks runs.
Now, all this is easier said than done. To make sure you stay on track in the office greening process, set goals. Mark your calendar with milestones like "July. 1: We will have purchased a 3-in-1 printer/scanner/fax. Aug 1: We will have moved all our important files to the cloud." And then celebrate meeting your goals with drinks to keep the green momentum going. You'll be completely green before you know it!
